FORMALIZED CURIOUSITY

In 2017, I began research on the morbidity and mortality of tornado outbreaks in Texas during an REU program at Texas A&M University. I have since refined and presented this work at two international public health conferences (Israel and Australia) as well as published my findings in the Professional Geographer journal. My Master's thesis research was conducted on the elements of cartographic design and content found in maps made by children in the 5th through 8th grade, investigating what elements of the environment are included and how the children choose to visually represent the geography around them. Expanding upon my Master's thesis, this research analyzed hundreds of children's hand-drawn mental maps from four perspectives: how children verbally described their maps, the content and design of the maps, how children use maps space (uniquely applying raster analysis), and how they visualize relations on their maps when spatial relations were not the primary organizing principle (e.g., temporal or conceptual maps).
